How to Prepare Your Dog for Boarding:
A Packing Checklist
Pack your dog's regular food in pre measured daily portions, bring current vaccination records, and add one or two familiar comfort items. Those three things cover most of what a boarding facility needs from you.
The rest of this checklist fills in the details so drop off day goes smoothly and your dog settles in fast.
Start With Food
Bring the same food your dog eats at home. Switching brands or formulas during a stay is the fastest way to cause an upset stomach.
Measure out each day's portion into a separate bag or container. Label them and add one or two extra in case your pickup gets delayed.
If your dog takes supplements or eats on a specific schedule, write it down. Clear instructions beat verbal ones every time.
Food Packing Quick List
- Daily portions in labeled bags, plus one or two spares
- Feeding schedule written out, including morning and evening times
- Treats your dog already tolerates well
- Any toppers or supplements with dosing notes
Bring Current Records and Medication
Most boarding facilities in the Round Rock area require proof of vaccination before your dog can stay. Have your rabies, distemper, and Bordetella records ready in advance.
Check the dates before you pack. An expired vaccine can hold up your drop off, and nobody wants that surprise on the morning of a trip.
If your dog takes medication, pack it in the original container with the label intact. Include the exact dose, the timing, and how your dog usually takes it, whether that is hidden in food or given straight.
| Item | What to Provide |
|---|---|
| Vaccination records | Rabies, distemper, Bordetella, current dates |
| Medication | Original container, dose, and schedule |
| Vet contact | Clinic name and phone number |
| Emergency contact | A local person we can reach |
Puppies and older dogs sometimes need extra attention here. If you have a young dog, our puppy care program keeps vaccination and feeding needs front of mind, and families with aging pets often ask about our senior dog care for medication and mobility support.
Pack Comfort Items
A familiar smell helps a dog relax in a new place. One unwashed shirt, a favorite blanket, or a well loved toy can make the first night easier.
Keep it simple. Two comfort items are plenty, and there is no need to send anything you would be upset to lose or see chewed.
Skip the expensive bedding. Facilities provide clean sleeping areas, so bring something replaceable that carries the scent of home.
Good Comfort Items to Bring
- An old t shirt or pillowcase with your scent
- A durable toy your dog does not guard or destroy
- A small blanket that fits in a kennel
Do a Trial Run First
If your dog has never boarded, a short daycare visit before the real stay helps a lot. It lets your dog meet the staff and learn the space with no pressure.
Many Round Rock families use a day of daycare as a warm up, and a first visit often starts with a free evaluation so we can see how your dog does around others. Smaller breeds sometimes do better in our small dog groups, which keeps play calmer.
A trial run also gives you a chance to test your packing list. You will quickly learn whether the food portions and instructions you sent were clear.
Make Drop Off Smooth
Feed your dog a light meal a few hours before drop off rather than right before. A full stomach plus car ride plus new environment can lead to nausea.
Get some exercise in that morning. A tired dog walks through the door calmer and settles faster.
Keep your goodbye short and upbeat. Long emotional farewells tend to make dogs more anxious, not less, and a quick confident exit signals that everything is fine.
Morning of Drop Off
- Light meal a few hours ahead
- A walk or play session to burn energy
- Bathroom break right before you leave
- Confirm your bag has food, records, meds, and comfort items
- Short, calm goodbye
